Let’s not create a self-fulfilling prophecy We’ve heard the economists and politicians talking about the ability for us all to talk ourselves into recession – to create a self-fulfilling prophecy through excessive caution and fear. Let's not fall into that trap. Let's focus on the great strengths we have and promote these at every opportunity. |

Let’s find our silver lining So said Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary, “A recession gets rid of crappy loss-making airlines and it means we can buy aircraft more cheaply”. Philanthropic this may not be, but I think we should take a leaf out of Michael’s book and think positively. Recession is tough but with it comes opportunity and there will always be ways in which we can make it work in our favour. Every cloud has a silver lining – let’s all try and find ours. |

Necessity is the mother of invention – just ask a private equity firm Necessity is the mother of invention – and that makes an economic downturn a rich and fertile landscape for entrepreneurs. Take private equity, for example. Now a highly profitable industry, private equity only really came into its own during the last recession when people saw that rescuing companies was a great way to create value. |
